Son of Godzilla (1967) Review |BasementRejects

  • Low Budget, but very creative.
    • Jun Fukuda has a way of turning a small movie like this into something worthy of the big screen. He generally works his way out of the hole that he's in (meaning, the lack of financial support this movie probably had), by making sure that the story is king, and that spectacle comes next.
  • This movie has heart, but that might be because it's for kids.
    • Godzilla teaching Minilla how to use the atomic breath is by far the cutest thing I've seen within this franchise so far. Next to that would be Baby Kong's scenes from Son of Kong, but that was definitely more melancholy than cute.
    • Minilla was the main star of the movie, down to his adventures within the island, his interactions with the humans, and defending Godzilla from the other monsters who inhabit the island.
  • It has a small cast of good enough characters.
    • It doesn't make sense for a girl to survive living in an island right after her mother dies giving her birth. But that part of the story doesn't really bother me that much. The girl islander was a nice touch to the seemingly all-male group operating on the island.
    • the journalist was also a nice touch, but I don't know how he got back inside of the laboratory after wandering so far into the beach area of the island, while the crew activated the experimental weather device on the island.
    • The grumpy dude was also a nice touch when it came to conflict. His character presented a very human lens to what would happen psychologically to people who are trapped in an island, doing a scientific experiment that only God knows if it would work or not. They were trapped on that island for months. Surely someone would start to go haywire. And the grumpy dude fit that title.
  • The plot is unique if compared to the previous films.
    • They were trying to find a way to manipulate the weather, because they were worried about over-population. I feel like one of the major things humanity has to deal with, is the overwhelming growth of population. That's been a common trope with sci-fi, and news in general. So having this as a plot is quite natural, especially when it comes to also dealing with existing monsters within the Earth (like Godzilla, Mothra, etc).
    • They execute the device correctly on the second try, and it leads to humanity's first victory in conquering the elements, giving them a supposed ace against the monsters in their universe. (a subject which is completely disregarded in the next film's setting).
  • Minilla looks abominable, and not in the right way.
    • his scenes were cute, but he didn't particularly look like a mini-godzilla. He looked like an alien of some sort. The general facial structure of Minilla is what I was bothered with. He looked like Kokey.
  • Kumonga looks hella good.
    • Once this giant spider comes out of the dirt, every scene it was in was freakishly good. This was by far the best suitmation design I've seen.
