Terror of Mechagodzilla: 2 Kaiju vs. The King of the Monsters | Japanese monster movies, Godzilla vs gigan, Movie monsters

  • An imbalance of scenes (in the bad way).
    • A few of these Kaiju movies have already dealt with this issue regarding the amount of human scenes and the amount of kaiju scenes within each movie. All Monsters Attack is the perfect example of a movie that has more human scenes in it, and less kaiju scenes altogether. They even recycled scenes from previous movies for All Monsters Attack, but it was done within reason, and worked out in the end.
    • For Terror of Mechagodzilla, there is a lot of exposition made within the human characters. It's a simple story, but it's stretched out too much that it's sort of mediocre by the end of the movie. I get that this needs to happen so that when the kaijus come and destroy/save the day, those scenes would have weight to them. We would have reason to be afraid or at least sad for the people living in the city of Tokyo.
  • Godzilla has become a cameo character at this point.
    • Take the first Godzilla movie. It sprinkles in Godzilla as slow as possible, while building the tension by use of human conversation and conflict. And by the end of that movie, Godzilla is a terrifying monster rampaging in Japan, and we as viewers feel the horror of the situation.
      • but as these movies are progressing with new monsters each year, they are also descending into lower grounds, lower quality, & lower stakes. Godzilla has become a hero in these latter films. Not that that's wrong, but he used to make sense being in these movies. Now, he's just there to save the day and immediately go back to whatever he does in Monster Island once the credits roll up the screen.
      • You could say that it's actually the character development of Godzilla that made him more friendly to humans, but that'd be lazy writing if you think that he'll just always be there to save the day from new-coming monsters. I would say that what these movies need is a gray area within the human's and Godzilla's relationship with one another. Have the humans do something of the atomic level that brings out the anger in Godzilla once again. Or have humans (who are secretly aliens) kill one of the memorable monsters (like Anguirus), and have Godzilla mourn by destroying the city, and then have the actual humans try to fix the situation, and make Godzilla realize that it wasn't them who killed his friend/family.
      • That'd be a nice Godzilla movie right there. To have actual consequences happen in the story.
  • They've become lazy with the new monsters.
    • Unlike King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra, all of the others are just single-serving monsters. Gabara, Hedorah, Gigan, Megalon, King Caesar, Titanosaurus, even Jet Jaguar--these are monsters you'd probably forget about. Anguirus is sort of the odd-ball when it came to the second-half of the Godzilla Showa Era movies. He was brought back slowly and had a significant role in Godzilla vs. Gigan. In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, he was only really there to add speculation for the false Godzilla (who was secretly Mechagodzilla after all), but he was a good monster to see nonetheless.
    • I wish they could bring Hedorah back in future movies. Cause he was the most compelling and terrifying monster so far, after King Ghidorah.
  • It has continuity from the previous movie, but fails to deliver.
    • The aliens from Black Hole Planet 3 were brought back a second time immediately after Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, but they're honestly boring and useless. They don't pose a threat (or at least I didn't see them as such) to the people of Earth. They were always secluded and worked incognito like they were afraid of showing themselves to the humans (I mean, I guess that's a good strategy if you want to invade the Earth, but makes for a bad screenplay). The earlier aliens in these movies showed themselves with pride, like they were really a superior race against the humans.
      • but look at the aliens from vs. Gigan, vs. Megalon, and now from vs. Mechagodzilla. The aliens were always covert in their operations. They never interacted with the human race in a large scale situation. Never shouted out their plans to the public, and always just passively brought out their lackeys to do the dirty work.
      • I miss seeing aliens who are proud to be aliens, who are proud cause they know their technology is far more superior than ours. I miss the Xiliens, and how they were able to infiltrate humankind secretly and successfully, while still maintaining a level of terror.
